British researchers found that different kinds of exercise affect appetite differently. Two enzymes play a role in how hungry we feel. Ghrelin tends to increase appetite. peptide YY decreases it.
To find out what affect different types of exercise have on appetite, they compared two different types. They found that the treadmill (aerobic) session caused ghrelin levels to drop and peptide YY levels to increase, indicating the hormones were suppressing appetite. The weight training sessions increased ghrelin levels and left the peptide YY levels unchanged. Simply put, aerobic exercise can suppress appetite. Other types of exercise, even though they may burn as many calories, increase appetite.
According to the senior author, David J. Stensel of Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, “The finding that hunger is suppressed during and immediately after vigorous treadmill running is consistent with previous studies indicating that strenuous aerobic exercise transiently suppresses appetite”
.Previous studies have been inconclusive about whether exercise decreases ghrelin levels, but this study may help explain those mixed results, according to the researchers.
